Heather was lying on her bed watching a spider spin a web. ever since Jamie had left there had been nobody to talk to, same as before he'd come at all. she sighed heavily and turned onto her side, pulling a picture out from under her pillow. in it was a man and woman and a young Heather, and they were smiling brightly in front of a little cottage. her eyes welled up with tears as she touched the faces of her mother and father.

The shadows outside her cell moved left and right before the dark nightmare appeared outside the cell, watching the young girl. Crying. He hadn't been one for emotions, not much. But he knew sadness and fear. And one equaled the other. He disappeared in the shadows again. "Such sadness." the voice echoed. "Why the tears?"

she bolted upright at the voice and looked around. Heather quickly wiped her eyes and walked to the bars. "who's crying?" she asked, trying to make her voice sound tough. "not me. just missing my family" why had that come out?

Pitch couldn't help but laugh again. "You say you aren't upset my dear child, but deep down even you have to admit that you are lying. I can see that."

she sighed and leaned against the bars. "yea. I'm lying. you gonna come out of the shadows now or am I going to have to talk to nothing?" truth be told it was kind of unnerving her. "I admit I'm sad. I watched my parents die. that's really hard. haven't you seen someone you care for die?"

Pitch hadn't thought about the death of his real daughter in a long time. He had almost forgotten about her. However, Heather's words struck him. "Indeed i do." he replied finally appearing. "Long before i became what i am today, i had a daughter. Katherine. She died thanks to the nightmares you see before you."

she stared at him, struck in awe by his appearance. "then why do you use them? I mean, if they killed your daughter" strange that they had that much in common. "what were you like, before you became what you are now? a scary and awe-inspiring creature of darkness, I mean? were you...human?" she'd often wondered that, actually. and now she might get her answer.

"We are all human at one point, i was human and then something happened. I am still fuzzy about the details, both me and my brother became the boogeyman and the sandman." Pitch shrugged. "As for your first question, it wasn't the nightmares specifically, it was just a strong amount of dark energy. Very bad dark energy."

"true. I've just never thought I'd meet you in person. I always wanted to know. so...you don't remember who you were or what you were like as a human?"so he was brothers with Sandman....somehow this made a drastic amount of sense. she wrapped her hands around the bars and looked at him with understanding. "you miss her, don't you? don't you regret being a being of dark energy?"

Again, the thought of it never occured to Pitch. "In a way, yes i do miss her. But that was a very long time ago." he replied. "As for the regrets. i don't really have any. this is what i was meant to do. In a way, i am just bringing balance to the world of light and dark. However, now i am just trying to tip it just a little bit more."

"still, she was your daughter. that must be really hard" she said quietly. Heather looked up at him. "why? why tip the balances? eventually they'll be set right again and then where will you be? right were you started"

Pitch laughed at that. "Really? You don't think the balance has already started tipping dear girl?" he asked. "Darkness is already taken over."

she tilted her head. "maybe, but scales always seem to tip back and forth, don't they. one day there's too much good, the next too much bad. you have to at least agree on that point"

Pitch rolled his eyes. "My my, you really are hopeful aren't you? the truth being, yes you are right but there will always be someone to tip the balances just far enough. that's what i want."

she shrugged. "I have to stay hopeful. it's not good to feel sad all the time" she rested her head against the bars. "yes, there will. I can't say there won't. I always believed in you, you know. it's still amazing that I'm seeing you face to face" she paused and appraised him. "you don't look like a wolf. I always thought you'd look like a big wolf with sickles for teeth and crying blood. huh. still, you are quite intimidating"
